High School Girls Flag Football Tournament

One of the events that showcases the talent and passion of flag football players is the High School Girls Flag Football Tournament, which was held for the first time in Forest Grove, Oregon, on November 13. The tournament was organized by Forest Grove High School, in partnership with the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) and Nike. The goal of the tournament was to promote flag football as a varsity sport for girls and to provide them with an opportunity to compete and have fun.

The tournament featured 16 teams from different high schools across Oregon, divided into four pools of four teams each. The teams played three pool games and then advanced to the single-elimination bracket based on their pool standings. The games were played on four fields at Forest Grove High School, with each game lasting 25 minutes or until one team scored 28 points.

The tournament was a success, attracting hundreds of spectators and media coverage. The players displayed their skills, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the day. The final game was between Westview High School and Southridge High School, with Westview winning 21-14 and becoming the inaugural champions. The tournament also featured an all-star game, where the best players from each pool were selected to play against each other.

The organizers of the tournament hope that this event will inspire more girls to play flag football and more schools to offer it as a varsity sport. They also hope that flag football will become an official OSAA-sanctioned sport in the future, as it is already recognized by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the International Federation of American Football (IFAF).

For more information about the tournament, visit https://www.forestgrove.k12.or.us/flag-football-tournament or contact Forest Grove High School Athletic Director Doug Thompson at dthompson@fgsd.k12.or.us.
