For Volunteers

The Vital Role of Volunteers in Flag Football

Flag football, with its fast-paced action and emphasis on teamwork, is a beloved sport that thrives thanks to the dedication of volunteers. These unsung heroes contribute their time, passion, and expertise to ensure that young athletes have a positive and memorable experience on the field. Let’s explore why volunteers are essential and what aspiring flag football volunteers should know.

  1. Growing the Game: Volunteers play a pivotal role in expanding flag football programs. By organizing leagues, clinics, and events, they introduce more players to the sport, fostering a love for football from an early age.
  2. Creating a Fun Environment: Volunteers create an atmosphere where young players can learn, compete, and enjoy the game. Their enthusiasm and encouragement inspire kids to stay active and engaged.
  3. Skill Development: Coaches and mentors help players improve their football skills during the offseason. Whether it’s teaching proper throwing techniques or emphasizing teamwork, volunteers contribute to player development.
  4. Transition to Tackle Football: Flag football serves as a stepping stone to tackle football. Volunteers prepare junior high players for the challenges they’ll face at the high school level.

Requirements and Certification for Flag Football Volunteers

1. Becoming an Official

  • Knowledge of Rules: While no prior experience is necessary, volunteers must have a thorough understanding of flag football rules. Training includes an online test (with a passing score of 80% or better) and on-field practice with an experienced official.
  • Equipment: Volunteers need to purchase specific officiating gear, including a black and white striped shirt, black pants or shorts with a white side stripe, a solid black lanyard, a whistle, a black belt, black shoes, and socks. The penalty flag should be yellow, and the referee wears a black cap with white piping.
  • Decision-Making: Officiating requires making decisions under pressure. Volunteers must handle criticism and maintain personal integrity.
  • Training and Clinics: Attend rules meetings, clinics, and official’s meetings. Continual learning and professional development are essential for effective coaching.
  • Love for Athletics and Kids: Coaches and referees should genuinely care about the well-being and growth of their players. A positive attitude and enthusiasm go a long way.

2. Coaching Volunteers

  • Background Check: Coaches must pass a background check to ensure the safety of young players. This step is crucial for maintaining a secure and supportive environment. At the FFRC we have partnered with Global Background Screening (GBS), a company that provides USA & International Background Checks for various purposes, including sports. Here are some key points:
    • On-demand, tech-first platform: GBS eliminates setup fees and yearly contracts, and offers a simple and friendly user experience with easy to use screening tools.
    • World-wide coverage: GBS can produce public records anywhere in the world, and conduct a world-wide background check in just a few clicks.
    • Comprehensive background checks: GBS provides reports on litigation, criminal activity, sanctions and watchlists, as well as social media screening, fingerprinting, and credit reports.
    • FCRA, GDPR, and other federal background check laws compliant: GBS ensures that all release forms and privacy notices are in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations.

    3. NFL FLAG Certification

  • High-Quality Training: The NFL FLAG program provides a certification course for officials and coaches. This training enhances the flag football experience for everyone involved.
  • Age Verification: Coaches and volunteers must verify participants’ ages through the National Sports ID Platform.

Volunteers are the backbone of flag football. Their commitment ensures that young athletes have a safe, enjoyable, and educational experience. So, whether you’re a coach, an official, or a passionate supporter, thank you for contributing to the vibrant world of flag football! 🏈🙌

2028 Olympics

Flag football is a fast-paced, dynamic and inclusive sport that has been growing in popularity around the world. It is a variant of American football that uses flags instead of tackling to stop the ball carrier. Flag football is played by people of all ages, genders and abilities, and it promotes teamwork, fitness and fun.

In 2028, flag football will make its debut as an Olympic sport, marking a historic milestone for the sport and its community. The excitement is building among players, fans and organizers as they prepare for the biggest stage in sports. The Olympic flag football tournament will feature 16 teams (8 men’s and 8 women’s) from different continents, showcasing the diversity and talent of the sport. The games will be held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, a legendary venue that has hosted two previous Olympics.

The inclusion of flag football in the Olympics is a result of years of hard work and advocacy by the International Federation of American Football (IFAF), the governing body of the sport, and its member federations. They have been working closely with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and other stakeholders to demonstrate the values, benefits and potential of flag football. They have also been developing and implementing programs and events to grow the sport at the grassroots and elite levels, such as the IFAF Flag Football World Championships, which have been held since 2002.

Flag football is more than just a sport. It is a movement that brings people together, fosters social inclusion and empowers individuals. It is a sport that anyone can play, anywhere, anytime. It is a sport that celebrates diversity, creativity and passion. It is a sport that is ready to shine at the Olympics and inspire millions of people around the world.
