flag football

If you are looking for a new way to enjoy football, you might want to check out the flag football events organized by the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association (MHSFCA). Flag football is a fun and safe alternative to tackle football that can be played by anyone, regardless of gender, age or skill level. In this blog post, we will give you an overview of what flag football is, how it is played, and how you can get involved in the upcoming flag football state championships in Michigan.

What is flag football?

Flag football is a form of football that uses flags instead of helmets and pads to indicate when a player is down. The rules are similar to tackle football, but instead of tackling, players have to pull off a flag attached to the opponent’s belt or waistband. This reduces the risk of injury and makes the game more accessible to a wider range of players.

Flag football can be played with different team sizes, field dimensions and scoring systems, depending on the league or tournament. Some common variations are 5-on-5, 7-on-7 and 9-on-9. Flag football can also be played indoors or outdoors, on grass or turf.

How is flag football played?

Flag football follows the basic structure of tackle football, with two teams competing to score more points by advancing the ball across the opponent’s end zone. Each team has four downs (attempts) to move the ball 10 yards or more. If they fail, they have to give up possession to the other team. If they succeed, they get a new set of downs.

The game starts with a kickoff, where one team kicks the ball to the other team, who then tries to return it as far as possible. The receiving team then starts their offensive drive from where they caught or recovered the ball. The offense can move the ball by running or passing it. The defense tries to stop them by pulling off their flags or intercepting or deflecting passes.

The game ends when one team has more points than the other at the end of regulation time, or after overtime if there is a tie. Points can be scored by touchdowns (6 points), extra points (1 or 2 points), field goals (3 points) or safeties (2 points).

The state championships will be hosted by Rochester Community Schools and will feature teams from different high schools across the state. The format and rules of the tournament will be decided once the number of participants are known. Teams are now being recruited for the event, so if you want to join or form a team, you should contact Coach Nicholas Merlo at (248) 953-0037.

The MHSFCA and its 3,500 members have been promoting high school football in Michigan since 1972 and offer various events and resources for coaches and players. You can learn more about their mission, goals and objectives on their website: https://www.mhsfca.com/.
